Chapter 20

Differences of Opinion

I woke up because I heard a sound. The room was still dark. I flipped on the lamp beside my bed and looked around. Nothing. I pushed back my covers and crept to the bedroom door. “Lisa?” I called softly.

“No, it’s not Lisa,” someone said softly back.

A male voice. Not Jason. Certainly not Ghalib. I padded back to my bed and grabbed my robe off of the bed post. Before I turned around, there was a person standing in my bedroom doorway.

Matthew.

“Matthew, what are you doing here?” I asked. His presence here was confusing. I couldn’t imagine why Ghalib would send him to me instead of Lisa or Jason.

“I... I heard this was your suite,” he said, running a hand through his hair. The chestnut waves fell back into his eyes. “The door was unlocked.”

A cold chill gripped me. “Does Ghalib know you’re here?”

“No.” He looked frightened but determined. “I needed to see you.”

“Have you lost your mind?” I asked him, trying to turn him and steer him back to the exit. “You absolutely have to go.” Where my hand met his arm, the Drawing tingled with a rich sweetness. If the Drawing had a taste, Matthew’s would have been milk chocolate.

He wouldn’t let me move him. Instead, he captured my hand and looked at me pleadingly. “Elaine,” he said in a low voice. “I think I’m in love with you.”

“Stop it. You’re not in love with me,” I said, pulling my hand away. “It’s just the Drawing. That’s all.”

“It isn’t,” he insisted. His brown eyes were as earnest as any I’d ever seen. His cheeks suffused with pink at the confession.

“Regardless of how you feel about me, you can’t be in here,” I managed. “This is dangerous. Ghalib keeps a very close eye on me.”

“He treats you like a... a thing. His thing,” Matthew said, his voice stronger, his words coming in a rush. “I would never be that way with you. He would hurt you just for fun. I want to protect you. That’s why I followed you to the auditorium last night—to make sure you were all right.”

How could someone live here and be as naive as he was? If Ghalib decided he wanted to hurt me, nothing short of Nyx would stop him. “I can take care of myself. At the moment, I’m worried about you,” I said, pushing on him again. “If you go now, you can tell him you got lost and went into the wrong room.”

“Come away with me,” he said, his eyes pleading.

“No.” My voice rose with my fear. “Don’t ever let anyone hear you say something like that. I’m an Omnilight and a pet. Ghalib will never stop chasing me. And if not him, the other Architects. Or Nyx.”

I watched his face, waiting for it to dawn on him how fruitless his plans were. All I saw was determination. “Then you don’t care for me at all?” he asked.

“Of course I care,” I said. “But, even if I care, I can’t run a—”

He didn’t wait for me to finish.
